Estudiante Emiratos Árabes inventa generador solar bajo el agua
DUBAI: Yosef Al Jassim, a chemical engineering student of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), Al Ain has nothing less - stored underwater - a new Solar Thermoelectric Generator (STEG).
The invention of this young Arab student is nothing new to the industry which uses STEG designs on shore. His invention has only one difference - he uses natural water resources like sea, lake and rivers - to generate power.

“The STEG has been designed in a way that uses the available water resources as a main part of the design. It converts the concentrated solar radiation into clean electrical energy, efficiently. It can be combined with other renewable energy applications, especially the Solar Thermal plants for better working efficiency,” Al Jassim told The Gulf Today at his university’s stall at the ongoing Getex education expo at Dubai World Trade Centre.

This new invention was unveiled at the UAEU on March 27 this year. Before the announcement, it had already won the 2nd Best Invention Prize in the First Innovation and Creativity Conference and Exhibition held at UAEU.

“The key features of this invention include producing clean energy without pollution, minimising the usage of land apt due to the availability of natural water and solar radiation, ability to combine with other processes and produce in small scale for areas not electrically connected as well as large scale for electric grids,” added Al Jassim.

Educators from Russia’s Moscow University and Pakistan’s Lahore University are participating for the first time in Getex this year.

Leading specialist of Synergy University from Russia Anna Golovacheva said that the university now offers classes in MBA for females in hotel management at its premises in Dubai Lake Towers. It will soon start courses in Russian language as well.

Principal of The University of Lahore, Pakistan, Prof Dr Moghees A Baig said that his university wants to put an end to the so-called brain drain and relocate Pakistani students from other countries to the home country.

“We are targeting not only Pakistani but international students who wish to study in Pakistan where we offer good higher education in competitive economic expenses,” he said.

There are other first-timers in the expo like CUCA of Ajman and Ambassador Kindergarten, the first-of-its-kind KG school in the higher education exhibition.

The European International College (EIC), an Abu Dhabi-based institution that specialises in offering hotel management, tourism and business-related courses, has announced that it will be launching a bachelors’ in Business Administration (BBA) programme with a concentration in hotel management and tourism, during its participation in Getex Spring 2013.
